Fields of Mistria Animal Breeding Guide: Tiers and Colors
Breeding animals in Fields of Mistria comes down to four rules: keep one male and one female of a species, raise both to 2 hearts by feeding and petting them daily, then buy two Heart-Shaped Treats from Hayden's Shop and give one to each animal. Rare colors come from climbing six rarity tiers — you breed two animals of the same tier to reach the next one, and the rarest Tier 6 seasonal colors only come from Tier 5 parents bred in the right season.
There are eight livestock species in the game. Coops house Chickens, Ducks, Rabbits, and Capybaras; Barns house Cows, Horses, Sheep, and Alpacas. Early on you only have access to chickens and cows, which are the most important starter livestock.
Getting Your First Animals
Before you can adopt anything, buy a Coop or Barn from the Carpenter's shop on the Eastern Road and place it on your farm — you cannot purchase an animal until it has a home. Then head to Hayden's Shop, the large barn with a cow on it at Sweetwater Farm just west of your farm, and choose your animal's gender: buy one male and one female so you can breed more later.
To unlock ducks, horses, sheep, rabbits, capybaras, and alpacas, complete the story quest Upgrade Hayden's Barn. Finish up to "Restocking Mistria's Food Reserves 2", then speak to Adeline. The upgrade costs 4,000 T, 400 Wood, 500 Stone, and 8 Iron Ingots, and fully expands Hayden's livestock offerings.
Note that many color variants only appear in Hayden's shop after you have bred and discovered them yourself.
Daily Care and Feeding
Animals need feeding and petting every day, and the better the care, the more materials they give back. You can feed animals by hand — equip the feed and approach them for the "feed" option — or place feed into the trough inside their coop or barn.
Different sizes eat different feed: small animals eat Grass Seed or Small Animal Feed, while large animals eat Hay or Large Animal Feed. Hay and Grass Seed come free from cutting grass around your farm with a sword, both can be bought at Hayden's Shop, and a more deluxe feed can be made at the Mill. Consistent daily care is also how you raise animals to the 2 hearts needed for breeding and, eventually, to the heart level 8 threshold for golden products.
How Breeding Works
Breeding is more involved than in Stardew Valley and closer to Story of Seasons: you need purchased items even for chickens. Buy the treat matching your animal's size — the Small Heart-Shaped Treat for coop animals and the Large Heart-Shaped Treat for barn animals — and buy two of them.
Both parents must be at 2 hearts first, which you earn by feeding and petting them every day. Give one treat to the male and one to the female; afterwards you will see an egg incubating in the coop or the barn animal preparing to give birth. The baby is a new color variety of that species, and rare variations can be sold to Hayden for a hefty amount of tesserae — or bred further toward even rarer varieties.
The Six Tiers and Rare Colors
Every species has 15 color variants tied to six rarity tiers. Tier 1 animals are bought directly from Hayden. Pair two animals of the same tier to produce the next tier up:
- Tier 1 x Tier 1 = Tier 2
- Tier 2 x Tier 2 = Tier 3
- Tier 3 x Tier 3 = Tier 4 (Silver)
- Tier 4 x Tier 4 = Tier 5 (Gold)
- Tier 5 x Tier 5 = Tier 6 (seasonal colors)
Mixed-tier pairs will never produce the next tier up — a Tier 1 x Tier 2 pair cannot make a Tier 3, though there is a small chance of another Tier 2. Always pair matching tiers for progression. No combination guarantees a specific color within a tier, and either gender can appear in any color.
The tier pattern is shared across all eight species. Tiers 1 and 2 each have three natural colors per species, Tier 3 is Blue, Pink, or Purple, Tier 4 is Silver, and Tier 5 is Gold. Tier 6 colors depend on the season the animals are bred in: Spring (green), Summer (orange), Fall, and Winter each have their own look, with the Fall and Winter variants differing by species. Community breeding notes suggest some seasonal results depend on giving the treats on the last day of the preceding season (to be confirmed).
Animal Products and Golden Variants
Each species produces gatherable goods on a schedule. Cows give Milk daily and Bulls drop Bull Horns every three days; Hens lay Eggs daily while Roosters drop Feathers every three days. Horses, Sheep, Alpacas, and Rabbits produce Horse Hair, Wool, and Rabbit Wool every three days, Ducks lay Eggs daily with Drakes dropping Feathers, and Capybaras drop Bristles every three days.
Once an animal reaches heart level 8 or higher, it produces golden versions of its products. Golden products are worth prioritizing — Golden Milk and Golden Chicken Eggs especially — because they are excellent income and feed into high-tier cooking recipes, currently out-earning fine gemstones from the mines or bulk fishing.
Shiny Beads and the Chicken Statue
Well-fed livestock drop Shiny Beads, and the better the food, the more you get: basic hay and grain drop one bead per animal, while expensive options like crops and Ultimate Animal Feed drop three to six. Trade beads at the Chicken Statue just to the bottom left of Hayden's farm — 10 beads earns a small reward, while 100 beads earns a rare one.
The 10-bead reward pool includes cooking recipe scrolls (Deviled Eggs, Omelette, Pudding, Quiche, and Vegetable Quiche) and exclusive animal cosmetics such as the Cow Halo, Horse Crown, Capybara Bowler Hat, Sheep Unicorn Horn, and Duck Sun Hat.
Barn and Coop Upgrades
Both building types come in three sizes, with identical costs and unlocks:
| Size | Unlock | Capacity | Breeding Pairs | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | Available at the start | 4 | 1 | 2,000 T, 100 Wood, 75 Stone |
| Medium | After building the small version | 8 | 2 | 4,000 T, 125 Wood, 100 Stone |
| Large | Ranching level 40 | 12 | TBA (to be confirmed) | 8,000 T, 150 Wood, 125 Stone |
Because each building only supports a limited number of breeding pairs, plan your tier pipeline around capacity: keep same-tier pairs together and retire lower tiers as better colors hatch.
